What Happens to a Woman's Body after Menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of the aging process for women, and happens when the ovaries stop producing eggs and there’s a decrease in hormones like estrogen and progesterone. This can bring a variety of physical and emotional changes, but it also marks an opportunity to transition into a new phase of life with joy and optimism.

The Physical Changes

  • Hot flashes: Hot flashes happen when changed hormone levels affect blood vessels near the skin, resulting in flushing and sweating.
  • Sleep problems: Many women find themselves sleeping more lightly or waking up earlier than before menopause due to hot flashes, night sweats, frequent urination at night or other factors.
  • Vaginal dryness: Estrogen helps keep vaginal tissue well lubricated. After menopause, there’s less estrogen available so the vagina may become dryer or thinner than before.
  • Changes in sexual desire: Menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness or hot flashes can affect a woman’s desire for sex or her ability to reach orgasm easily during intercourse.
  • Urine leakage: Lower levels of estrogen can cause weakened muscles around the bladder, leading to leaking urine when coughing or sneezing.
  • Stress incontinence: During menopause hormonal changes make some women more likely to leak urine during activities that put pressure on their bladder such as jogging or sneezing.
  • Bone loss: Without hormone replacement therapy (HRT), bone loss can occur due to low estrogen levels after menopause — this increases risk of fracture and osteoporosis.
    • Weight gain: Many women tend to gain weight around their abdomen during menopausal transition due to redistribution of fat from other parts of the body such as thighs, hips and buttocks — this is called “central obesity”.

    The Emotional Changes
During menopause you might experience a whole range of emotions including sadness, irritability and even depression — these are all typical reactions based on hormonal shifts in the body. It is important not to underestimate these changes since they can have an impact on your quality of life if left unchecked – luckily there are plenty of treatments available nowadays that aim at alleviating them both physically and emotionally!
