Are the buses still free HRT?

Are Buses Still Free with the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT)?

The answer to this question is complicated, as the rules for free bus rides on the HRT vary depending on who you are and where you're going. The general rule is this:

Fares for Hampton Roads Transit Buses are normally $1.50/person. However, some people may be eligible for reduced fares or free rides on certain routes.

  • Children under 5 years of age always ride free!
  • Students ages 18 and under can receive a Youth pass for $1 per ride, or $20 per month.
  • Seniors 65 and disabled persons pay half fare ($0.75/ride) if they have a valid ID card.
  • Military personnel with a valid military ID ride free at all times!
  • Certain employers participate in a partnership program that offers discounted passes to employees who work in downtown Norfolk or Hampton business districts - these discounted passes cost just $40/month.
  • And lastly, people living in certain areas of Norfolk qualify for Free Fare Fridays, which allows them to ride any HRT bus for free every Friday!

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to get free or discounted bus rides on HRT buses if you meet the eligibility requirements. For more information about discounts and eligibility requirements, visit the HRT website.
